Description

What are hiring committees looking for when hiring faculty members?

What skills will get you a position at your target institution?
Which institution is right for your skill level?

Workshop Description:

IIn this workshop, we will discuss the hiring requirements of different types of institutions for tenure-track faculty positions available to life scientists in the U.S., including R1 institutions, primarily undergraduate institutions, liberal arts colleges, master's granting universities, and community colleges. Participants will use the Academic Career Readiness Assessment (ACRA) Framework, a tool developed with the input from faculty members who have been on hiring committees at diverse types of institutions, to learn about the skills required for each type of position, to assess their level of preparedness for different positions and think about the skills they should highlight in their faculty applications. The ACRA Framework is the result of a qualitative study funded with the support of a Burroughs Wellcome Fund grant.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

    • Describe the different types of academic institutions in the US
    • Describe hiring criteria of the institutions they would like to work at
    • Assess their level of readiness for a position
    • Describe what skills they should highlight in their application materials
